EC Reesby ltd originated in the South Waikato town of Mangakino when its founder Ernie Reesby successfully bid for a contract to transport the dam workers to Atiamuri. Within a few years Ernie was transporting the workers to Aratiatia and Ohakuri and had replaced the single open top truck with a fleet of buses.
In 1963 Ernie moved his business and family to Rotorua. One of first regular bus runs was the Friday Night Picture Bus. Every Friday at exactly 10.00pm this bus left the local cinema and took the patrons back to Atiamuri – regardless of whether the movie had ended or not! The original school run from Tihi Otonga was quickly joined by a Ministry of Education School Run from Lake Okareka and Lake Tarawera. Tourist and charter work followed, new coaches ordered and the first depot was constructed in Riri Street. The business quickly grew too big for the Riri St depot and relocated to Marguerita St, where VTNZ is today. In the late 1960s when the Tongariro Power Schemes were under construction Ernie made the decision to open a second depot in Turangi. The business grew and was later sold to his son.
Today, EC Reesby Ltd operates from Allen Mills Rd on the eastside of Rotorua just 10 minutes from the airport. And, after more than 50 years it is still family owned and operated.
